Woke up bright and early and started cleaning the lodge we were staying in. After taking out the trash, tidying the rooms, and carrying all our bags down the steep scoria hill, we packed into the cars and headed for Auckland. After 5 hours of listening to Tom's authentic New Zealand music, we arrived at the airport an hour before our flight. We were shocked when security only took 5 minutes, we had the luxury of getting to leave our shoes on and got to take through as many liquids as we wanted. We were also never asked for identification (yikes!).
We had an absolutely lovely flight with Air New Zealand, watching the sunset over the horizon as we said goodbye to the North Island. Some of our favorite parts of the flight included the hilarious informational video, the complementary wine, and the assortment of cheeses. After landing in Queenstown and grabbing our bags, we piled into an identical white van and drove to our motel - The Pinewood Lodge. Us kids had a delicious dinner at the Fat Badger Pizza Bar in downtown Queenstown, followed by the BEST gelato of our entire lives at Ferg's. We all went to bed psyched about our ~Free Day~!!!
The free day was full of many adventures! Reid, Robby, and Liam went on a Lord of the Rings tour where they got to visit many iconic scenes including the misty mountains and got to hold a replica sword. Jagger and Gus went skydiving and had an exhilarating time watching the sunset in free-fall. Sydney explored Queenstown and had one of her highlights of the trip - feeding the ducks by the waterfront. She also climbed Queenstown Hill which had scenic views and was much larger than normal hills. Henry and Lowry had the time of their lives catching fish on a river for several hours, returning at 7pm sunburnt and smiling. Mel, Nora, & Maddy went bungee jumping on the world's first commercial bungee jump on Kawarua Bridge, followed by zip lining - an adrenaline-filled morning!! A few of us met up and took the gondola up one of the mountains to the Skyline overlooking the city, and had a blast racing each other on the Luge ride. The day eventually ended with everyone reconvening in our shared common room and watching The Office - a wonderful end to a wonderful day.
